Introducing DanceAbility – A new movement class for all abilities
Calling all movement enthusiasts! Spring Mill Dance Academy in Ivyland, PA, is now proudly offering ‘DanceAbility’, a dance and rhythmic movement class for individuals of all abilities and their care partners!
Dance and rhythmic movement are aerobic activities that decrease pain and improve balance, cardiovascular health, coordination, endurance, memory, and movement. Neuroplasticity is the rewiring of the brain and nervous system in response to new information/behaviors or challenges. Incorporating dance into one’s recreational activities can increase the neuroplastic process in the brain since it requires multisensory activation and can positively affect physical fitness, cognition, and brain plasticity during the aging process.
All ‘DanceAbility’ classes begin with deep breathing and gentle stretching from head to toe. Throughout the body of the class, Brain Gym exercises, which are specifically designed to improve the functioning of the brain, along with activities to enhance coordination and balance, are explored. Basic elements of ballet, ballroom and line dancing will be intertwined throughout sessions to promote proper body alignment, body carriage, and memory retention. Most importantly, all classes are designed to encourage and motivate dancers to use their own unique sense of creative self-expression.
The studio in which class takes place is equipped with barres attached to the wall, as well as portable center barres and sturdy chairs. This helps to make all activities introduced accessible for all participants, no matter their level of movement ability. Care partners are also welcome and encouraged to attend!
Classes are led by Jessica Pescatore, BA in Dance and MA in Movement Therapy, and g
